Today we will be reviewing
Confessor by Terry Goodkind. Confessor
is the final tale in the Sword of Truth series.
This review may contain a few minor spoilers and is brought to you by We Compare Books, where you can find cheap textbooks, and other books at a low price.
Confessor itself is a part of the Chainfire Trilogy, which is the final major story arc in the series. The story begins right where the last book, Phantom left off. Richard Rahl, the protagonist, is now a captive of the Imperial Order, where he plays on a Ja La team that is comprised of his fellow captives. Also his wife Kahlan Amnell is a prisoner of Emperor Jagang, as is Nicci. Richard’s team hopes to earn the right to Emperor Jagang’s personal Ja La team. As you may recall Ja La is a brutal sport that seems to be somewhat similar to rugby, but almost anything is legal, including killing a player on the opposite team. Richard serves as the team’s leader and point-man. His true intention is to rescue his wife Kahlan and attempt to escape the Imperial Order, so that he can continue his quest to put an end to the Order and to bring the war to an end. No small task.
This book is impressive in a number of ways. The Sword of Truth series is very long, spanning eleven novels and one prequel. Confessor does an excellent job at bringing all story arcs to a close. The Chainfire story arc is brought to a decisive a satisfying end. The reader also gets to see the evolution of many of the major characters and how their lives have changed based on events and choices. This is most apparent with Cara, Richard’s bodyguard and close friend.
Another interesting aspect of how the story is written is the parallels in the journeys of Richard Rahl and Darken Rahl in the very first book, The Wizards First Rule. Darken Rahl was Richards father and very different man than Richard. In fact one could consider the two to be polar opposites, with Richard being good and Darken Rahl being evil. In Confessor Richard is attempting to open Boxes of Orden, and as such he must follow the same steps as Darken Rahl. The way the two men go about following the required steps is very different.
If one thinks back to the first book, Kahlan could not tell Richard about her ability because it would affect their ability to have a relationship together. In Confessor, there is something similar. Richard has a secret that he can not reveal to Kahlan, as it would affect their relationship, bring their story to full circle.
All in all, Confessor is an excellent read and a very good way to end a great series. It does feel rushed at times but that is to be expected, given the length of the series and everything that needs to brought to a close in order to provide a satisfying ending to the series. I give Confessor a 10/10, for its rich narrative, full bodied characters, great action sequences, and ending.
